I received B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Seoul National University in 1999, working with Dr. Sung June Kim. Then I received my Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2004, working with Dr. Reza Shadmehr. After that, I did my postdoctoral research in Systems Neuroscience, first in Dr. Richard Andersen's Lab at California Institute of Technology and then in Dr. Takaki Komiyama's Lab at the University of California, San Diego. I joined the faculty at the Chicago Medical School of Rosalind Franklin University as an Assistant Professor in August 2020.

I was born in India and was brought up in America. I did a portion of my undergrad studies at University of Maryland College Park. I completed the rest of my studies in the West Indies at Metropolitan University College of Medicine. I moved to Chicago to do my clinical rotations. As of August 2021, I am a MD graduate! I believe research is a way to expand the mind and a great way to gain some vital skill sets to help me progress in my career choices. I am thankful and grateful for the opportunity to be working at RFUMS in the Hwang Lab! Some of my hobbies include painting, singing, and annoying my cat Patchy!

Hello! I grew up in Korea and moved to the U.S. in 2024. I earned my B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from Ewha Womans University in 2019, followed by a PhD in the same field in 2024 under the guidance of Dr. Sang Beom Jun. I recently joined Dr. Hwang’s Lab as a postdoctoral researcher. I truly believe that science and engineering create powerful synergy, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of this team. I’m excited to contribute to ongoing projects and explore new, innovative research directions. Looking forward to connecting and collaborating!

Hello! My name is Sophia, and I am a research assistant in Dr. Hwang’s lab. I grew up near Chicago and then moved to Baltimore where I studied neuroscience with a minor in psychology at Johns Hopkins University. I’m very interested in molecular biology and its applications in neuroscience. I joined this lab to learn more about how the brain functions and how activation of certain regions can influence behavior. Outside of lab, I can be found hanging with my cats, singing, and hiking. I am so happy to be a part of this team.

I am an international undergraduate student double majoring in neuroscience and psychology at Lake Forest College. For over a year, I have been conducting research in Dr. Hwang's lab, where I have found an incredible environment for scientific growth. My passion for science stems from a desire to answer meaningful questions and translate discoveries into real-world impact. Dr. Hwang’s lab has provided me with invaluable opportunities to develop both wet and dry lab skills in neuroscience as well as taught me to think critically, further fueling my commitment to research.
